Watch your back, Steph

First Poole took the free-throw crown from Curry.

Now he’s taking the end-of-quarter buzzer beaters from him.

Brown’s halftime adjustment

Jaylen Brown’s halftime adjustment has been to get the ball moving to his right so he can get Curry switched onto him, then faking like he’s gonna drive wide right so he can cross back to his left and get deep into the paint for a tough finish.

He isn’t strong making multiple dribbles with his left, but he does finish lefty hooks pretty well through contact.

For Brown, as long as he can get to the restricted circle, he can pretty much always find a way to throw up a difficult finish through contact.

Drop coverage for the win (for now)

Would you look at that, the Celtics are effectively playing a drop coverage on Stephen Curry!

One block by Grant Williams, one shot alter by Robert Williams II, and no 3s for Steph. It can be done.

And the difference between Game 4 and tonight is a matter of a couple inches, not because the Celtics have thrown the coverage itself in the trash bin.

Hand down, man down

Shooting variance, yes, but these are some lick-your-fingers-check-the-wind open looks the Celtics are getting.

Celtics take a 58-55 lead

Celtics started 0-of-12 from 3. They are 8-of-8 since. Warriors are 3-of-21. Steph Curry is still yet to hit a 3.

Might be time for traditional pick-and-rolls for Warriors

With the way Marcus Smart is bumping Stephen Curry off the ball, it’s probably time for Steve Kerr to go back to more traditional pick-and-rolls with his superstar.

The off-ball stuff worked early, but Boston has adjusted.

3-point struggles for both sides

After missing their first 12, the Celtics are 5-for-17 from 3. The Warriors are 3-for-17.

Celtics open the third on 10-0 run

Big moment as the Celtics have a huge scrambling defensive possession for a shot clock violation and then Tatum is in control getting Wiggins over a screen then snaking back to get a wide-open three.

Buries a contested 3 on the next play and it’s a 2 point game. What a run.

Warriors lead 51-49.

Tough going for Jaylen Brown in the first half

Hard to figure out how Jaylen Brown scores when Draymond Green is in his area as the Warriors are getting hands on the ball while he’s holding it and then Green is shading him left so hard that the only counter is to bounce out and call for a clear out.

Brown isn’t hitting his one dribble pull-up tonight and Green is too big and fast to let Brown get to his eurostep toward the right.

Even when Brown tries to drive across the lane and kick it out, he doesn’t slow down to make reads on two feet and the Warriors can get deflections on his kick outs.

That was a clanktastic first half

The two teams combined to shoot a ghastly 6-for-32 on 3-pointers in the first 24 minutes of action, that’s 18.75 percent for those of you scoring at home.

For the most part, both teams have generated reasonably healthy long distance shots even if fewer were taken by each teams’ absolute best shooters.

Expect those looks to go down in a higher proportion moving forward, which is a big reason why I focus more on shot quality than shot success in the early part of a game.

Even so, the horrendous shooting has made finishing even more important and somehow that amplifies Robert Williams’ impact. The Warriors are far less aggressive both shooting in the paint and driving when Williams is out there, something that was clear in the final few minutes of the second quarter when Williams was off the floor.

Hopefully Udoka is saving some of Williams’ minutes for the second half because the Celtics need more than twelve minutes of their best rim protector per half if he is physically capable of it, this has been an impressive, gutty Finals from the 24-year old big man.

It was bad, but could be worse for Boston

Jaylen Brown made a number of bad decisions. The Celtics bench did not make a field goal. Boston’s offense has been an absolute mess.

The Celtics have put themselves in a brutally tough spot on the road, but are still one run away from being right back in this game.

Great minutes for GP2

The Warriors have gotten great first-half minutes out of Gary Payton II. He’s been exceptional on defense. Even played center for a stretch.

He was matched up on Robert Williams III and Andre Iguodala noticed it and tried to switch. But Payton waved him off. He’s defended Brown, Tatum, Smart and Horford in his 13 minutes.

Even more, he’s given the Warriors seven points, including a corner 3.

Payton’s play makes for an interesting development down the stretch. Jordan Poole has not looked good and the Celtics have attacked him on defense much more in this game.

It could very well end up being Payton down the stretch.

Dare I say?

If the Warriors win this game, and ultimately this series, and Andrew Wiggins is the most consistent two-way player in the series, shouldn’t he be named MV (gets hit in the head with a mallet)?

Warriors lead 51-39 at half

Draymond Green plays his best half of the Finals, scores eight points and flies around. Andrew Wiggins gives 16 and seven rebounds. 10 points from Steph Curry without making a 3 yet.

Warriors defense holds Celtics to 39 points. Up 12 at half. Neither team is making their shots.

Let’s see if it pays off

Really like this game plan for the Celtics to get their stagnant crunch-time offense out of the way early so that maybe they will know how to run a play in random in the fourth quarter.

It’s a bold strategy Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for ’em.
