Could Louisville be a potential location for WNBA expansion?

The WNBA is looking at expanding, according to a recent report by The Athletic. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told The Athletic she hopes to have a city or two identified for an expansion franchise, which could begin playing as early as the 2024 season. Could Louisville be a viable option if the league chooses to expand? University of Louisville women’s basketball head coach Jeff Walz shared his thoughts on the topic on Friday. “It’s something that definitely could be talked about and considered,” said Walz. “There’s just a lot of pieces that go into it. But I do think the support that our city shows for our program and then just all of our women’s sports in general here would make this a viable option if they decided to expand.”Walz was asked about possible WNBA expansion while he was attending an event on Friday at Shively Park for his former player Angel McCoughtry. McCoughtry played at UofL from 2005-09. She unveiled a renovated basketball court in the park at the event. McCoughtry, who is a professional basketball player, most recently with the Minnesota Lynx, shared her thoughts on if Louisville should be considered for a WNBA expansion franchise. “We’re ready for expansion,” said McCoughtry. “It’s time. We’re eager. I know they said by 2024. So I’m hoping we submit the city of Louisville, so we can get it.”
