Phoenix Mercury host ‘Bring BG Home’ rally to push for Griner release

Cherelle Griner was met with a standing ovation on Wednesday afternoon as she walked to the podium during the ‘Bring BG Home’ rally at the Footprint Center.

As she waited for the crowd to stop clapping, she looked down at her prepared speech about her wife, Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner, who has been detained in Russia for 139 days.

“Talking about my wife is easy and natural for me because that’s my person,” Cherelle said. “However, talking about my wife, in the light of her absence from her country, her safety and her humanity as a person is gut-wrenching.”

The Phoenix Mercury hosted a ‘Bring BG Home’ rally in support of Griner at the Footprint Center on Wednesday.

Griner has been detained in Russia since she was arrested on February 17 at the Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow. She has been accused of large-scale transportation of drugs and faces 5-10 years in prison if she is convicted. According to the Associated Press, fewer than 1% of defendants in criminal cases are acquitted in Russia.
